- The IDX Composite closed at 4,904.29 on November 3, down 3.78 percent from the previous close.
- All 11 IDX-IC sectors declined, led by basic materials with a 6 percent drop.
- Market sentiment was pressured by MSCI-related concerns and a wider regional technology selloff.
The IDX Composite dropped sharply on Tuesday, November 3, as selling spread across the Jakarta market. The index closed at 4,904.29, down 192.54 points or 3.78 percent from Monday's close of 5,096.83. The decline took the benchmark below the psychologically important 5,000 level and marked a new five-year low, according to Investing.com.
Broad weakness across all sectors
The decline was unusually broad. Databoks, citing Indonesia Stock Exchange data, reported that all 11 IDX-IC sectors ended lower. Basic materials fell the most, losing 6 percent, followed by energy at minus 4.38 percent and transportation at minus 3.90 percent. Finance declined 2.07 percent, while technology fell 1.92 percent.
Market breadth underscored the pressure: 624 stocks fell, compared with 57 gainers and 37 unchanged stocks, while trading value reached approximately IDR 11.55 trillion. Investing.com reported that declining stocks outnumbered advancing stocks 721 to 56, with 56 unchanged, reflecting differences between the market-data snapshots used by the sources.
MSCI concerns remain a market overhang
Investor confidence remained constrained by concerns about the potential consequences of MSCI's warnings over ownership transparency and coordinated trading practices. The Star, citing Reuters, said the proposed market-classification downgrade continued to weigh on sentiment. The report also pointed to a broader regional technology selloff and caution ahead of the US midterm elections.
The market had entered Tuesday with some technical support after Monday's 0.79 percent gain to 5,096.83. However, IDNFinancials reported that analysts were monitoring the implementation of an IDX policy excluding 81 high-shareholding-concentration stocks from JCI calculations. That reform had been intended to address market-structure concerns, but the index instead experienced a broad selloff.
For investors, the session's combination of a new multi-year low, sector-wide declines and ongoing market-classification uncertainty points to elevated near-term volatility. Further direction will depend on whether selling pressure eases and whether confidence improves around Indonesia's market-structure reforms.
