The IBEX 35 closed the Friday, October 30, session at 18,652.90 points, down 1.09 percent from the previous close. The decline came as a renewed sell-off in technology stocks, pressure on banks and uncertainty surrounding interest rates weighed on European markets. The closing level was reported by Europa Press.
Technology and banks weigh on trading
Investor attention remained focused on corporate earnings and the reaction of global technology shares to spending on artificial intelligence. Expansion reported that the Nasdaq was under pressure after sharp falls anticipated for Intel and Amazon, adding to a broader technology sell-off that also affected European equities.
Financial stocks were another source of weakness. Europa Press said investors were assessing fresh results from CaixaBank and Unicaja, while the broader banking sector remained sensitive to questions about the sustainability of earnings, credit demand and funding costs. The IBEX 35 has a comparatively high financial-sector weighting, making the sector's performance especially relevant for the index.
Leaders and laggards at the close
Repsol was the strongest performer, rising 4.49 percent, followed by Grifols at 2.81 percent and Puig at 1.90 percent. On the downside, Acerinox fell 5.47 percent, Solaria lost 5.10 percent and Banco Santander declined 3.75 percent. BBVA dropped 3.70 percent, while Indra fell 2.32 percent, according to Europa Press.
The wider market backdrop remained unsettled. Europa Press reported that Brent crude stood at 117.60 US dollars a barrel during the European close, while the Spanish 10-year government bond yield was 3.936 percent, down from 3.972 percent previously. These figures illustrate the combination of energy and financing concerns affecting the market, but they do not by themselves establish a single cause for the IBEX 35's daily move.
October closes in negative territory
The IBEX 35 lost 1.77 percent over the week and 3.90 percent during October, according to Europa Press, marking its second consecutive monthly decline and its weakest monthly close since March. The result leaves investors balancing earnings developments, technology valuations, banking-sector expectations and the direction of monetary policy as the next trading month begins.
