The IBEX 35 extended its rebound on Wednesday, November 4, with the Spanish benchmark up 2.67% at 19,308.8 points at 12:00 Berlin time. The midday level was reported by EFE. BME identifies the IBEX 35 as the leading benchmark of Spain's domestic market and the underlying index for numerous financial products.
Banks drive the European rebound
Banking stocks were the main support for the Spanish index. EFE reported gains of 5.61% for CaixaBank and 4.70% for Banco Santander, while BBVA rose 4.23%. Solaria also advanced 4.86%. By contrast, Indra fell 3.90%, ACS declined 1.08% and Grifols lost 0.22%, leaving only three IBEX constituents in negative territory in the EFE snapshot.
Europa Press likewise reported a 2.69% gain at mid-session, with Santander, Solaria, BBVA, ArcelorMittal and CaixaBank among the strongest performers. Its report linked the market backdrop to the Democratic Party's victory in the US midterm elections and its takeover of both chambers of Congress.
Election result sets the tone
The political result has produced a mixed set of possible market implications. Euronews reported that European equities turned higher after an initially nervous start, with banks among the leaders. Its analysis also noted that investors were considering the implications for tariffs, Ukraine, defense spending and the scope for legislative gridlock in Washington. These remain political and macroeconomic considerations rather than a guaranteed path for the Spanish index.
Data and Wall Street next
Spain's registered unemployment rose by 43,128 people in October, according to the data cited by Europa Press, while average Social Security affiliation increased by 186,612. European markets were broadly higher at midday, and US equity futures pointed to a positive opening in the EFE snapshot. The IBEX 35 therefore entered the afternoon with a strong advance, but the index remained exposed to further changes in expectations for US policy, energy prices and the Middle East situation.
