The FTSE 100 closed at 10,882 points on October 16, 2026, up 42 points or 0.4 percent. Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said evidence of second-round inflation effects was limited, Morningstar reports.
Babcock International led the advance, rising 3.6 percent. NatWest fell 1.2 percent as reports of a possible bank tax increase weighed on lenders, according to Reuters.
Why did the FTSE 100 rise?
Bailey said inflation effects beyond the initial shock remained subdued. He also said monetary policy was already restrictive and that earlier expectations for two rate cuts had been reasonable. The comments supported equities despite persistent Middle East tensions and elevated oil prices.
The index gained 3.1 percent during the week. Defensive sectors had also helped the benchmark earlier in the week as investors reduced exposure to artificial-intelligence stocks, Spreadex said.
