The decision places the regulatory timetable ahead of the next major date for European crypto service providers, while USDT remains the largest dollar-pegged stablecoin by market capitalization.
ESMA gives platforms three months
ESMA told national regulators that authorized crypto platforms should stop services that allow European Union customers to buy, trade, swap or increase holdings of stablecoins that do not comply with the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, or MiCA. The guidance does not name individual tokens, but CoinDesk identifies Tether-issued USDT as the main large-scale example that is not authorized under MiCA.
National regulators are expected to oversee remaining customer holdings within three months of the October 8, 2026, opinion. Limited services such as selling, converting, withdrawing, transferring or safeguarding tokens can continue during the wind-down period, according to CoinDesk.
