Bovespa closed at 176,608 points on October 26, losing 28,474 points or 13.9 percent. The result followed a sharp repricing after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won re-election in Brazil, according to Exame.
Trading was halted for 30 minutes after the index fell 10 percent at the open. The Bovespa later reached a low of 169,516 points, while export-oriented stocks resisted the selloff. The dollar gained 8.2 percent to BRL 5.4027, Reuters reported.
Why is the Bovespa down today?
The election result overturned positioning for a victory by Flavio Bolsonaro. That reversal hit banks, retailers and other domestic-demand companies, while higher future interest rates added pressure to leveraged businesses.
Sixty-eight of the 76 index stocks finished lower. Financial, consumption and real estate shares led losses, while the session's financial volume reached BRL 88.6 billion, three times the daily average, Exame said.
Bovespa winners and losers
Exporters benefited from the weaker real. The following closing figures came from the same session and venue, as listed by Money Times and Exame:
- Suzano up 10.1 percent: dollar-linked revenue supported the exporter.
- Embraer up 8.9 percent: the exporter advanced with the weaker real.
- WEG up 4.2 percent: its international exposure supported the gain.
- Magazine Luiza down 58.2 percent: higher future rates pressured the retailer.
- Vamos down 56.8 percent: leveraged domestic exposure weighed on the shares.
- Hapvida down 54.9 percent: the healthcare operator joined the domestic-stock selloff.

The index opened at 205,070 points and reached a high of 205,089 points before the selloff deepened. It touched 169,516 points at its low before recovering into the close, according to Exame.
