- Binance said a hot-wallet incident caused approximately 6.3 billion USD in losses, while about 3 billion USD had been frozen on-chain.
- BNB Chain said BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, BNB Greenfield and its bridge contracts were unaffected and operating normally.
- The Jenner testnet upgrade reserves 5 percent of block gas capacity for eligible payment transactions, while mainnet timing remains unannounced.
BNB price became a focus for crypto investors after Binance disclosed a major security incident involving unauthorized withdrawals from its hot wallets. In a report updated on October 30, CNBC said BNB had fallen 6 percent to 701.18 USD as digital-asset markets reacted to the incident. That was a dated market observation, not a verified UTC day-over-day change for October 31.
Binance said in its October 30 security update that its hot wallets were compromised at about 20:05 UTC on October 29. The exchange estimated the loss of token assets at approximately 6.3 billion USD and said about 3 billion USD had been frozen on-chain. Withdrawals were temporarily suspended while security checks continued, while deposits and other unaffected services remained operational. Binance said it would cover the stolen funds through its Secure Asset Fund for Users and corporate treasury.
Exchange Risk Differs From Chain Status
For BNB holders, the operational distinction is material. In a separate BNB Chain statement, the network said BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, BNB Greenfield and its bridge contracts were not affected. It also said the services were operating normally and that on-chain funds were secure. This does not remove counterparty or market risks connected with Binance, but it separates the reported exchange incident from the condition of the named network infrastructure.
Jenner Upgrade Adds Payment Capacity
BNB Chain's official Jenner upgrade guide says the hard fork was scheduled for the BSC testnet on October 28. Its Payment Lane reserves 5 percent of each block's gas capacity by default for qualifying payment transactions, with governance able to adjust the share up to 10 percent. The upgrade also adds millisecond timestamp access for smart contracts and the underlying capability for the CAS20 compliant-asset standard. Separate governance activation is required for token creation and policy-registry updates, and mainnet timing was not announced in the guide.
The near-term investment question is therefore two-sided: Binance's security response remains a significant market and confidence risk, while BNB Chain continues to develop network functionality. The dated 701.18 USD level reported by CNBC should be read in that event context rather than as a current quote or a daily UTC performance figure. The BNB price can remain sensitive to both exchange-related developments and evidence that network upgrades translate into sustained usage.
