- The ATX fell 0.86 percent to 6,420.03 points on Friday, October 30.
- Higher oil and gas prices and weak international technology stocks weighed on the Vienna market.
- Erste Group gained after reporting stronger-than-expected quarterly results, while AT&S fell sharply.
- The index still gained 2.4 percent over the week but lost 6.3 percent in October.
The ATX ended the Vienna trading session on Friday, October 30, at 6,420.03 points, down 0.86 percent from the previous close of 6,475.46 points. The decline came as higher oil and gas prices increased pressure on European equities and weak signals from international technology stocks weighed on investor sentiment. The closing figures and market commentary were reported by t-online, citing dpa-AFX.
Energy and technology weigh on Vienna
The session followed a mixed performance across European markets. According to the report, rising energy prices and weakness among international technology shares were the main factors pressuring the Austrian benchmark. The broader ATX Prime index declined 0.80 percent to 3,152.39 points.
Good results from Erste Group provided support but were not enough to reverse the market-wide decline. The bank gained 0.9 percent after its third-quarter net profit reached 1.12 billion euros, four percent above the consensus estimate cited in the report. The company also raised its full-year outlook excluding Poland. The bank attributed the strong result primarily to its interest business, with net interest income rising six percent from the previous quarter.
AT&S falls while OMV reaches record
AT&S was among the clearest drags on the index, falling 13.3 percent. Disappointing quarterly results from US technology companies, including Intel, renewed concerns about the sustainability of the artificial-intelligence investment cycle, according to the market report.
OMV moved in the opposite direction, rising 3.0 percent to 76.15 euros and reaching a new record high. Higher energy prices supported the oil and gas group, while fresh analyst commentary following its results also helped sentiment. Do&Co gained 1.0 percent after UBS began coverage with a Buy rating and a 230 euro price target.
October remains a weak month
Despite Friday's decline, the ATX gained 2.4 percent over the week and partly recovered from the previous week's losses. The monthly result was considerably weaker: the index lost 6.3 percent in October, its worst monthly performance since March 2023. Erste Group analysts cited in the report said that the correction from the record high reached at the end of September was showing initial technical signs of a possible base formation. This is a market assessment, not a forecast or investment recommendation.
