The ATX gave up its early gains on Thursday and finished the Vienna trading session 0.11 percent lower at 6,511.40 points. The Austrian benchmark had traded nearly 2 percent higher during the day before a sharp deterioration in sentiment on Wall Street pulled the index back into negative territory.
According to dpa-AFX, published by Yahoo Finance, the ATX had started the session at 6,518.52 points, its closing level from Wednesday. The Thursday close therefore represented a decline of 7.12 points, equivalent to 0.11 percent based on the preceding close.
Wall Street reverses early gains
The late change in direction was linked in the report to a sharply weaker trend in US equities, with the Nasdaq particularly affected. Semiconductor shares with exposure to artificial intelligence came under heavy selling pressure as investors assessed the possibility of tighter regulation following the US midterm election result.
The move was significant for Vienna because AT&S, a major supplier to the technology and semiconductor industry, fell 15.6 percent despite reporting strong quarterly figures. The company reported a 52 percent increase in currency-adjusted second-quarter revenue to 681.9 million euros and swung to a group result of 125.4 million euros from a loss of 7.6 million euros a year earlier. The figures provided support at the company level but did not prevent the shares from being caught in the broader technology sell-off.
Mixed signals from reporting season
Other company results produced a mixed picture among ATX constituents. Lenzing shares rose 7.1 percent even though the fiber producer reported lower revenue and earnings for the first nine months. Verbund gained 8.6 percent after reporting weaker operating figures and lowering its full-year profit outlook to 1.01 billion euros. Erste Group raised its assessment of Erste Group shares from "Reduce" to "Add" and set a six-month price target of 128 euros, while the bank's shares gained 1.4 percent to 112.40 euros.
The session illustrates how quickly international risk sentiment can outweigh supportive company-specific news in a smaller European market. For the ATX, the next focus will remain on the interaction between the ongoing reporting season, technology-sector sentiment and developments on Wall Street.
