Alpenglow targets 150 milliseconds
Alpenglow changes how validators, the computers that confirm transactions and secure the network, reach agreement. The upgrade replaces TowerBFT voting with direct validator communication and certificates that can finalize a block after one or two voting rounds, according to CoinDesk. The targeted finality time is 150 milliseconds, compared with roughly 12.8 seconds under the former design.
The activation followed a scheduled transition at epoch 1064 on October 21, 2026. CoinDesk said the change occurred at slot 459,653,000 after a 5,000-slot transition. Validator costs also shift to a fixed admission charge of 0.8 SOL per epoch, according to the same report.
ETF withdrawals add a dated counterpoint
U.S. spot Solana exchange-traded funds recorded 9.8 million USD of net outflows on October 15, 2026, according to FinanceFeeds. The report said Grayscale's GSOL accounted for 6.0 million USD of the withdrawals and Bitwise's BSOL for 3.8 million USD. ETF flow figures measure net subscriptions and redemptions in the products, not direct SOL transactions.
A separate weekly tally from Solana Compass put withdrawals at 25.0 million USD for October 5 through October 9, 2026. The figures describe fund flows for dated sessions and do not establish a cause for the SOL price.
