- The AEX ended the November 2, 2026 session 0.17% lower.
- Oil and gas, telecommunications and technology stocks weighed on the Dutch index, according to Investing.com citing Reuters.
- Investors faced a busy week with central-bank decisions, earnings, US midterm elections and the nonfarm payrolls report ahead.
The AEX finished the Monday, November 2, 2026 session 0.17% lower. The decline came despite a mixed European backdrop, with investors weighing weaker oil prices, technology-sector volatility and a dense calendar of economic and political events.
Sector losses weigh on Amsterdam
Investing.com, citing Reuters, reported that losses in the oil and gas, telecommunications and technology sectors weighed on Dutch stocks at the close. Shell fell 3.26%, while Ahold Delhaize declined 2.20% and ASM International lost 1.59%. CVC Capital Partners was among the strongest AEX performers, rising 7.75%, while Akzo Nobel gained 4.45%.
The market breadth was less negative than the index move: 63 stocks rose on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, compared with 33 decliners, while seven shares ended unchanged. The sector mix nevertheless left the large-cap benchmark lower, illustrating the influence of major index constituents on the AEX.
Oil and AI remain key themes
In a Reuters report published by Euronext, Brent crude was reported sharply lower after renewed hopes for progress in US-Iran discussions. The report also pointed to stronger US manufacturing activity and a softer euro-area manufacturing reading. These developments provided a mixed macro backdrop for European equities.
A separate Reuters market report on Euronext said that a rebound in global stocks weakened during the US afternoon as investors questioned the durability and valuation of the artificial-intelligence investment cycle. For the AEX, the technology exposure of companies such as ASM International added to the day's pressure.
Busy week ahead for markets
Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank, the ongoing earnings season, the US midterm elections on Tuesday and the US nonfarm payrolls report due later in the week. Those events may shape expectations for interest rates, economic growth and the valuation of technology shares. The AEX's next move will therefore be assessed against both company-specific results and broader global risk appetite.
