Zijin Mining highlighted the expansion of autonomous haulage at its Julong Copper Mine in an update published on Wednesday, November 4. More than 70 autonomous trucks are now operating at the site, with productivity approaching 90 percent of human-driven vehicles. The company announcement said the Zhibula pit has achieved fully driverless haulage.

Driverless haulage scales at Julong

About 45 autonomous trucks were operating at Zhibula during the company report, while others returned automatically for charging. Dispatchers monitor the fleet from a control room roughly 10 kilometers away. Zijin said the system combines radar, image recognition, redesigned haul roads, larger loading and dumping areas, traffic lights and dedicated traffic rules.

The program began at Julong in 2024. Former truck drivers have moved into remote dispatcher roles, allowing Zijin to shift some work away from the high-altitude pit environment. Management presented the change primarily as a safety measure, reducing the scope for irregular human operations at the production face.

Technology reaches other mine sites

Zijin has also deployed autonomous trucks at its Zijinshan Gold-Copper Mine in China and at Norton Gold Fields in Australia. For investors, broader deployment could support operating consistency and labor efficiency, although the company update did not provide a financial target or quantify a direct earnings contribution.
