Wells Fargo is weighing a potential expansion of its digital-asset infrastructure after Payward, the parent company of Kraken, entered discussions to supply liquidity for crypto trading. CoinDesk reported the talks on October 7, citing two people with direct knowledge of the matter.

Under the potential arrangement, Payward would provide access to liquidity for digital-asset transactions while Wells Fargo could avoid building every part of the trading infrastructure itself. The discussions are private, remain ongoing and may not result in an agreement. Both companies declined to comment, according to CoinDesk.

Bank builds broader digital strategy

The potential liquidity relationship would extend Wells Fargo's existing digital-asset activity rather than confirm a new customer product. The bank offers spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds to eligible wealth-management clients and has backed crypto compliance firm Elliptic and trading technology provider Talos.

CoinDesk also reported that Wells Fargo has announced plans for blockchain-based deposits and joined a consortium developing a dollar stablecoin. The bank served as Nasdaq's exclusive capital-markets adviser on the exchange operator's September agreement to invest 100 million dollars in Payward and deepen cooperation on tokenized equities and market surveillance.

For investors, the reported talks indicate that Wells Fargo is assessing external market infrastructure as it develops digital-asset capabilities. They do not establish the timing, economics or scope of any future service. The potential customer group, supported assets, trading venues, custody structure and regulatory execution remain open questions.
