Wells Fargo is weighing deeper access to digital-asset markets. On October 7, CoinDesk reported that Payward, the parent company of Kraken, was in talks to become a liquidity provider for Wells Fargo's crypto trading.

The report, citing two people with direct knowledge of the matter, said Payward could supply liquidity for digital-asset transactions. The discussions were private, remained ongoing and might not result in a deal. Wells Fargo and Payward declined to comment, so no commercial terms, supported assets, customer scope or launch timetable were established by the report.

Potential Infrastructure Partnership

A liquidity arrangement could give Wells Fargo access to trading venues and execution infrastructure without requiring the bank to build every market connection itself. Payward's services extend beyond the Kraken exchange and include trading, payments and financial infrastructure for banks, fintechs, brokerages and payment companies.

The talks would add to Wells Fargo's existing digital-asset activity. The bank offers spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds to eligible wealth clients, has backed crypto compliance firm Elliptic and trading technology provider Talos, and has announced plans for blockchain-based deposits. It also joined a consortium developing a dollar stablecoin.

Wells Fargo has a prior connection to Payward through Nasdaq. The bank acted as Nasdaq's exclusive capital-markets adviser on the exchange operator's September agreement to invest 100 million US dollars in Payward and deepen cooperation on tokenized equities and market surveillance.

For investors, the development points to a possible expansion of Wells Fargo's digital-asset infrastructure rather than a completed product launch. The absence of a confirmed agreement leaves the timing, economics and regulatory execution of any future arrangement unresolved.
