Wells Fargo is preparing a new framework for customer-authorized artificial intelligence agents, with the revised online access terms taking effect on November 24, 2026. The change shifts important supervisory and transaction risks toward customers while preserving the bank's ability to restrict agent access.

A different path from peers

In a legal update published on November 3, Hunton Andrews Kurth said four major US banking organizations changed their approach to third-party AI agents between October 13 and October 20. JPMorgan Chase, Charles Schwab and Citigroup moved toward blocking credential-based agent access, while Wells Fargo rewrote its terms to place the risk of customer use on the customer.

Section 15 of the updated Online Access Agreement treats instructions, actions and transactions initiated by an authorized AI agent as if they were initiated and authorized directly by the customer, without further verification, subject to applicable law or regulation. Customers must supervise agents, keep them within their granted authority and retain evidence when revoking authorization.

Bank retains control over access

The provisions do not create an unconditional right for agents to operate inside Wells Fargo accounts. The bank reserves the ability to require agent registration, change access methods or limit, suspend or terminate access. Hunton also says the agreement does not amount to an outright ban, while read-only data sharing through open banking connectors remains a separate channel.

For investors, the policy places customer trust, fraud controls and future digital-banking features at the center of the issue. The practical scope of permitted agents and any regulatory response will determine whether the contractual approach supports broader adoption or creates additional friction for customers.
