The Walt Disney Company is preparing thousands more job cuts across television networks, its film studio and theme parks, according to a November 3 report by K-EnterTech Hub, which cited reporting by Bloomberg and Deadline. Managers in some units have been asked to identify savings of up to 20% a year, while the timing and final scale of the reductions remain under discussion.
The planned reductions would extend a restructuring that has already affected marketing, Pixar, National Geographic, human resources, technology and Imagineering. K-EnterTech Hub reported that the savings are intended to support film and television programming, technology, and the parks and cruise businesses rather than represent a broad retreat from investment.
Restructuring follows stronger operating results
The cost measures come after a strong fiscal third quarter ended June 27. Disney generated revenue of 25.25 billion US dollars, up 7% from the prior-year quarter, while total segment operating income increased 21% to 5.555 billion US dollars. Adjusted earnings per share rose 28% to 2.06 US dollars, even as diluted earnings per share fell to 1.51 US dollars.
Profit growth was concentrated in two areas. Experiences operating income rose 20% to 3.017 billion US dollars, supported by parks, resorts and cruise operations. Subscription video-on-demand operating income more than doubled to 712 million US dollars, giving the streaming business a 13% operating margin in the quarter. Sports operating income moved in the opposite direction, falling 17% to 858 million US dollars as programming and production costs increased.
Disney's fiscal 2026 outlook calls for fourth-quarter total segment operating income of approximately 4.9 billion US dollars, including the year's 53rd week. The company also expects adjusted earnings per share growth of approximately 12% excluding that extra week and approximately 16% including it. The November 17 results will show whether the new savings program produces measurable benefits and how management intends to reinvest them.
