- Third-quarter revenue increased while net profit declined as expenses grew faster than sales.
- Digital commerce and Central American same-store sales provided support during the quarter.
- Store expansion added to Walmex's investment base and operating-cost burden.
Walmart de México y Centroamérica posted a mixed third quarter on October 27, 2026, with sales growth unable to offset faster expense growth. Morningstar, citing Dow Jones, said the retailer's net profit fell 6.1 percent in the July-September quarter to 11.03 billion Mexican pesos from 11.75 billion pesos a year earlier.
Sales growth meets cost pressure
Revenue rose 3 percent to 248.83 billion pesos. The earnings decline came as general expenses increased 5.7 percent and reached 17.4 percent of sales, compared with 17 percent in the year-earlier quarter. Walmex said the higher spending was driven largely by growth investments, with productivity and efficiency measures providing a partial offset.
Operating profit fell 1.8 percent to 18.68 billion pesos, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization increased 0.4 percent to 25.37 billion pesos. The differing trends left investors with a clear near-term trade-off: Walmex continued to expand its sales base, but the cost of stores, digital operations and other growth initiatives weighed on profitability.
Digital channels remain a bright spot
Mexico's same-store sales rose 1.7 percent, supported by a 1.6 percent increase in the average ticket while store traffic changed little. Same-store sales in Central America grew 4.8 percent as more customers visited and average spending increased.
E-commerce sales in Mexico advanced 16 percent, including a 21 percent increase in goods delivered from stores. That performance gives Walmex a growth engine beyond physical-store traffic, although the latest quarter also shows that building capacity and defending competitiveness can raise the expense burden before the benefits fully reach the bottom line.
Store expansion raises the investment base
Walmex opened 42 stores during the quarter, including 39 in Mexico and three in Central America. At the end of September, the company operated 3,389 stores in Mexico and 957 in Central America. The expansion broadens the retailer's footprint but also increases the base from which operating costs and investment spending are measured.
