- Volkswagen reported a sharp deterioration in nine-month operating earnings as China, tariffs and electric vehicles weighed on profitability.
- Management and IG Metall will begin negotiations on terminated collective agreements in Emden on November 24.
- European order intake and battery-electric vehicle demand provided a counterpoint to the broader earnings pressure.
Volkswagen faces a difficult restructuring phase after reporting its weakest quarterly result in more than a decade. The company cited pressure from China, US tariffs, rising competition and lower profitability from electric vehicles.
Volkswagen reported a EUR 5.9 billion operating loss for the third quarter on October 29, according to Reuters. Quarterly revenue fell 6 percent to EUR 75.3 billion, while one-off charges, including a writedown linked to Porsche, deepened the loss.
For the first nine months, sales revenue declined to EUR 233.4 billion from EUR 238.7 billion a year earlier. Operating result before special items reached EUR 8.8 billion, with an operating return on sales of 3.8 percent. Vehicle sales fell 11 percent to 5.9 million units, although European order intake rose around 4 percent and battery-electric vehicle order intake increased 39 percent, Volkswagen said in its nine-month results release.
Labor talks add execution risk
Volkswagen and IG Metall agreed on October 23 to begin negotiations on terminated collective agreements in Emden on November 24, followed by talks in Zwickau on December 15. The company wants faster labor-cost reductions and has raised the prospect of transfer companies as part of its restructuring plan, according to Volkswagen Group.
