- Volkswagen reported a 5.9 billion euro operating loss for the third quarter after 7.8 billion euros in special items.
- Nine-month operating profit fell to 0.1 billion euros from 5.4 billion euros a year earlier.
- Management is targeting roughly 31 billion euros in cost improvements while maintaining a 2026 margin outlook of up to 1 percent.
Volkswagen reported a steep third-quarter loss on October 29, underscoring the pressure on Europe's largest automaker to overhaul its business. In its nine-month results release, the company said its operating result turned to a loss of 5.86 billion euros in the third quarter, compared with a loss of 1.30 billion euros a year earlier.
Quarterly sales revenue fell 6.3 percent to 75.28 billion euros. The result included 7.8 billion euros in special items, including a 6.4 billion euro non-cash impairment of Porsche goodwill, roughly 1 billion euros of impairment charges on assets in China and expenses related to the planned sale of Volkswagen Osnabrueck GmbH.
China and electric vehicles weigh on margins
For the first nine months, Volkswagen generated 233.38 billion euros in revenue, down from 238.67 billion euros in the prior-year period. Operating profit fell to 71 million euros from 5.41 billion euros. Excluding 8.7 billion euros in special items, operating profit reached 8.8 billion euros and the operating return on sales was 3.8 percent.
The company attributed the strain to a weak Chinese market, sharper global price and competitive pressure, tariffs and a higher share of lower-margin electric vehicles. Vehicle sales fell 11 percent to 5.9 million units in the first nine months. The automotive division nevertheless generated 4.4 billion euros in net cash flow, up from 1.8 billion euros a year earlier.
Europe provided a more constructive operating signal. Order intake rose 4 percent to 3.0 million vehicles, while battery-electric vehicle order intake increased 39 percent. Electric vehicles accounted for roughly 40 percent of the European order bank, which reached about 1.1 million vehicles at the end of September.
Cost plan sets the next test
CFO and COO Arno Antlitz said Volkswagen could not afford to lose time and had to act quickly and decisively. The group's Future Plan targets roughly 31 billion euros in cost improvements through a simpler model range, lower overhead, reduced vehicle costs, more efficient plants and faster technology development.
Volkswagen kept its 2026 outlook: group revenue is expected at about 315 billion euros and the operating return on sales at up to 1 percent. Automotive net cash flow is forecast at 3 billion to 6 billion euros, while automotive net liquidity is expected between 32 billion and 34 billion euros.
The real-time quote of Volkswagen stock showed 69.07 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:43 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026. The next phase for investors will center on whether Volkswagen can turn the announced savings into a sustained margin recovery without sacrificing its electric-vehicle investment.
