Visa and Tencent expanded their China payments partnership on Thursday, October 29, adding cross-border payments, remittances and AI-powered commerce to their cooperation. CNBC reported that the memorandum of understanding is intended to deepen Visa's position in China's expanding payments market.

Since the last report, Visa stock has moved from 370.35 euros at 10:00 CET on Saturday, October 31, to 378.60 euros at 16:46 CET on Monday, November 2, a 2.23 percent increase. The real-time quote of Visa stock is available here.

Cross-border payments lead the cooperation

Under the memorandum, Tencent and Visa will explore payment solutions for travelers entering and leaving China through TenPay Global, Tencent's cross-border payment platform, and Visa Pay. The companies also plan to connect participating merchants across the Weixin Pay and Visa networks, subject to regulatory requirements.

The partners intend to deepen their remittance cooperation through Visa Direct, which could make it easier for overseas users to send funds into the Weixin Pay ecosystem. The arrangement builds on an existing relationship and does not set out a rollout timetable or financial commitments.

AI adds a longer-term growth option

The agreement also covers agentic commerce, in which artificial intelligence agents could help users discover, select and purchase goods or services. CNBC said the companies will focus on secure, consumer-controlled payment experiences as they assess these applications.

The partnership follows Visa's approval from the People's Bank of China to begin preparations for a domestic bankcard clearing business. That approval starts a regulatory process but does not mean domestic clearing operations have begun.
