VIB (VN000000VIB1) completed a USD 285 million three-year syndicated loan on October 6, 2026, as part of a plan to raise USD 1 billion in international funding. VnExpress reported that the facility was provided by nine international financial institutions and would be disbursed in three tranches during 2026.
Three events shape the story
On July 27, 2026, VIB reported first-half pretax profit above VND 5.18 trillion, up 3.00 percent year over year, according to Vietnam Investment Review. On September 23, 2026, VIB said its assets had exceeded VND 580 trillion by mid-2026 in an anniversary review published by VIB. On October 6, 2026, the bank completed the USD 285 million loan reported by VnExpress.
What does the funding change?
The loan cost was 30 basis points below VIB's previous syndicated facility, while total foreign funding stood at USD 1.60 billion. Vietnam News reported that VIB expects this funding base to reach USD 2.00 billion in 2027. The lower funding cost and longer tenor give the bank additional capacity for retail, small-business and corporate lending, although execution will depend on credit quality and liquidity controls.
Retail credit adds scale
VIB's retail credit grew at an average annual rate of 23.00 percent from 2017 through 2025, equal to 1.60 times the industry average. The Vietnam Association of Banks reported that total assets grew 21.00 percent annually and profit grew 26.00 percent over the same period, while card spending in 2025 was 17.00 times its 2018 level. These figures place the funding deal within a broader retail expansion rather than treating it as a standalone balance-sheet transaction. Vietnam Association of Banks linked the figures to VIB's 2026 retail banking award.
Capital base supports lending
At the end of the second quarter of 2026, VIB reported charter capital of VND 37.35 trillion after issuing more than 323 million shares for a 9.50 percent stock dividend, while outstanding loans stood at nearly VND 400 trillion. The combination of fresh international funding and capital issuance gives the bank more balance-sheet resources, but the first-half pretax profit increase of 3.00 percent shows that growth remains measured rather than purely volume-driven.
