Valero Energy reported a sharp third-quarter earnings rebound on October 22, 2026, as stronger refining conditions and high operating rates lifted results across its main businesses. In its earnings release, the company said net income attributable to stockholders reached 6.8 billion US dollars for the quarter ended September 30, compared with 1.1 billion US dollars a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share rose to 23.89 US dollars from 3.53 US dollars, while adjusted diluted earnings per share came to 23.90 US dollars versus 3.66 US dollars.

Refining carried the quarter
The Refining segment generated operating income of 8.8 billion US dollars, up from 1.6 billion US dollars in the prior-year quarter. Refinery throughput averaged 3.0 million barrels per day. Valero said its refineries operated at near-record utilization rates, helping the company capture stronger fuel margins despite lower throughput than in the comparable period.
Management also highlighted the completion of the fluid catalytic cracking unit optimization project at the St. Charles refinery in Louisiana. The project was finished on schedule and within budget and is expected to increase the facility's capacity for higher-value products such as alkylate and gasoline. That expansion gives Valero additional operating leverage if product markets remain supportive, although refinery profitability remains sensitive to supply, demand, feedstock costs and geopolitical developments.
Other segments improved
Renewable diesel operating income recovered to 353 million US dollars from a 28 million US dollar loss a year earlier. Sales volumes averaged 3.4 million gallons per day. The improvement reduces a recent drag on the company's lower-carbon fuels portfolio, although the segment remains exposed to policy conditions and commodity-price swings.
Ethanol operating income increased to 272 million US dollars from 183 million US dollars. Production averaged 4.8 million gallons per day, a new quarterly record. Across the company, operating cash flow reached 6.9 billion US dollars, while adjusted operating cash flow was 7.3 billion US dollars after adjustments for working capital and the joint venture structure.
What investors watch next
Valero ended the quarter with 9.8 billion US dollars in cash and cash equivalents and 8.6 billion US dollars of total debt, according to the release. The company also repaid 526 million US dollars of notes and debentures that matured during the quarter. These figures leave the balance sheet positioned to support capital spending and shareholder distributions, while future returns will still depend heavily on refining margins.
