Valero Energy reported a sharp rebound in third-quarter profitability on October 22, 2026, as stronger refining margins lifted all major earnings measures. In its investor release, the company said net income attributable to Valero stockholders reached USD 6.8 billion, or USD 23.89 per diluted share, compared with USD 1.1 billion and USD 3.53 per share a year earlier.

Adjusted net income was USD 6.8 billion, or USD 23.90 per share, against USD 1.1 billion and USD 3.66 per share in the third quarter of 2025. Revenue climbed to USD 46.098 billion from USD 32.168 billion. The figures show how strongly the quarter benefited from market conditions in fuel refining, although the comparison also reflects the much weaker prior-year base.

Refining supplied the earnings surge

The Refining segment generated USD 8.8 billion in operating income, up from USD 1.6 billion in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted refining operating income reached USD 8.8 billion versus USD 1.7 billion. Throughput averaged 2.972 million barrels per day, compared with 3.087 million barrels per day a year earlier, while refining margin per barrel rose to USD 39.24 from USD 13.14.

Valero's Gulf Coast operations were the largest contributor, with refining margin of USD 6.472 billion compared with USD 2.073 billion in the year-earlier quarter. The North Atlantic region also posted higher operating income, while the West Coast business returned to a positive result after a loss in the comparable period.

Chief Executive Lane Riggs said Valero's refineries operated at near-record utilization rates during the quarter. He also highlighted completion of the St. Charles FCC Unit optimization project, which was finished on schedule and within budget and is intended to increase output of higher-value products such as alkylate and gasoline.

Renewables and ethanol add support

The renewable diesel segment reported operating income of USD 353 million, reversing an operating loss of USD 28 million in the third quarter of 2025. Sales volumes averaged 3.4 million gallons per day. Ethanol operating income increased to USD 272 million from USD 183 million, while production reached a quarterly record of 4.8 million gallons per day.

Cash generation was also substantial. Net cash provided by operating activities was USD 6.9 billion, including working-capital effects and the other joint-venture member's share of Diamond Green Diesel. Adjusted net cash provided by operating activities was USD 7.3 billion. Capital investments totaled USD 432 million, including USD 371 million for sustaining operations.

Valero ended September with USD 9.8 billion in cash and cash equivalents, USD 8.6 billion in total debt and a net debt-to-capitalization ratio of 4 percent. The company repaid USD 526 million of debt that matured during the quarter's broader reporting period. The balance sheet and cash generation give management room to maintain shareholder returns, but the earnings concentration in refining leaves results exposed to future margin changes.
