- Universal Music Group reported faster subscription growth in the third quarter, supported by pricing and subscriber gains.

- Publishing and merchandising remained weaker areas, leaving execution and integration key issues for investors.
Universal Music Group reported stronger operating momentum for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, with subscription growth accelerating and core profitability improving. The company published the results on October 29, while investors continue to assess the contribution from Downtown and the outlook for streaming economics.
According to Universal Music Group, third-quarter revenue rose 11.7 percent in constant currency, including the consolidation of Downtown. Excluding Downtown, revenue increased 5.3 percent in constant currency, with Recorded Music and Music Publishing benefiting from subscription growth, stronger physical sales, higher ad-supported streaming revenue and increased digital publishing revenue.
Recorded Music remained the main growth engine. Subscription revenue increased 19.2 percent in constant currency including Downtown and 9.5 percent excluding the acquisition. UMG attributed the performance to wholesale price increases and continued subscriber growth, while market-share pressure moderated from the first half of the year. Streaming revenue rose 13.5 percent including Downtown, or 4.7 percent excluding it, helped by growth at several video and digital partners and improved per-play rates.
Physical revenue advanced 17.4 percent in constant currency both including and excluding Downtown. The increase covered North America, Japan and Europe as well as frontline and catalog releases. Downloads and other digital revenue continued to decline, highlighting the ongoing shift in the recorded-music format mix.
Margin progress meets uneven segments
Adjusted EBITDA grew 9.0 percent in constant currency for the group. Excluding Downtown, adjusted EBITDA increased 7.0 percent, while the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 0.4 percentage points to 22.4 percent. UMG said Recorded Music led the margin improvement through lower relative A&R spending and tighter cost control, partly offset by revenue and repertoire mix.
Performance was less uniform outside Recorded Music. Music Publishing revenue grew 7.5 percent in constant currency, but adjusted EBITDA declined 3.5 percent, reflecting a lower margin after a prior-year expense timing benefit. Merchandising and Other revenue fell 4.6 percent as touring income compared with a stronger prior-year base, while the segment’s adjusted EBITDA declined to 11 million euros.
Chief Executive Sir Lucian Grainge said UMG was investing in artistry, improving streaming economics and expanding opportunities for artists and fans. Chief Financial Officer Matt Ellis pointed to the faster subscription growth and the 40-basis-point expansion in the adjusted EBITDA margin excluding Downtown, while emphasizing the integration of Downtown and efficiency measures.
UMG stock traded at 16.97 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:17 CET on Friday, November 6, 2026. Investors are likely to focus next on whether subscription momentum can remain broad-based, whether Downtown delivers the intended strategic benefits and whether weaker publishing and merchandising trends stabilize.
