Universal Music Group N.V. reported stronger third-quarter operating momentum on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as subscription growth accelerated and the integration of Downtown Music broadened the group's business. The results were published by Universal Music Group for the three months ended September 30.

Revenue reached 3.394 billion euros, up 11.7 percent year over year in constant currency. Excluding Downtown, revenue growth was 5.3 percent. The acquisition contributed to the headline increase, while the underlying business benefited from subscription revenue, strong physical sales, higher ad-supported streaming revenue and digital growth in Music Publishing.

Subscription momentum improves

Recorded Music subscription revenue grew 19.2 percent in constant currency, or 9.5 percent excluding Downtown. Universal Music Group attributed the performance to wholesale price increases and continued subscriber growth, while market share pressures moderated compared with the first half of 2026.

Recorded Music revenue increased 14.7 percent in constant currency, with physical revenue up 17.4 percent across North America, Japan and Europe. Streaming revenue rose 13.5 percent, while downloads and other digital revenue declined as the industry continued shifting toward streaming formats.

Adjusted EBITDA increased 9.0 percent in constant currency, reaching 729 million euros. Excluding Downtown, adjusted EBITDA grew 7.0 percent and the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 0.4 percentage points to 22.4 percent. Recorded Music drove the improvement through lower relative artist-and-repertoire expenses and tighter marketing and overhead costs.

Mixed performance across divisions

Music Publishing revenue rose 7.5 percent in constant currency, although growth excluding Downtown was 1.5 percent. Its adjusted EBITDA declined 3.5 percent, with the margin excluding Downtown falling to 24.2 percent partly because the prior-year quarter benefited from a timing effect in expenses.

Merchandising and Other revenue declined 4.6 percent as touring income fell against a prior-year quarter with more high-profile tours. Direct-to-consumer sales from the ship-to-home program for selected tours provided some offset, but segment adjusted EBITDA fell to 11 million euros.

Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said UMG would continue investing in human artistry, streaming economics and technology while making the company faster and more focused. CFO Matt Ellis pointed to the acceleration in subscriptions, the margin expansion excluding Downtown and the potential benefits of integrating the acquired businesses.
