UPS is preparing a broader pricing and service reset before the 2027 peak season. On its official shipping rates page, the company says published daily rates for Ground, Air and international services will rise by an average net 5.9% effective December 21, 2026.

The same update adds several operational changes that were not part of the earlier pricing summary. UPS will launch Protected Delivery on November 16, with a secure PIN required before a shipment is released and a charge of USD 10.70 per shipment. From January 4, 2027, air shipping documents will be discontinued and incur a USD 5.00 surcharge if used. UPS 3 Day Select and Ground Shipping Documents will carry a USD 10.00 surcharge under the new rules.

More than a base-rate increase

UPS will also raise the minimum billable weight for Additional Handling packages from 40 pounds to 50 pounds. Area-surcharge ZIP codes and the alignment of some ZIP codes with shipping zones will change on December 21, while a new per-package surge fee will apply to certain domestic Ground and Ground Saver shipments for qualified customers.

UPS says the effect on shipping costs will depend on shipment characteristics and customer-agreement terms. For investors, that makes the average rate increase a pricing lever rather than a direct forecast for consolidated revenue or margins. Customer responses, contract discounts and shipment mix will determine how much of the increase reaches the top line.

Execution becomes the next test

The changes arrive ahead of the holiday cycle, giving customers time to alter contracts and shipping choices. They also raise the execution stakes as UPS seeks higher-value shipments while managing the risk that price-sensitive customers reduce volumes or shift lanes.
