Umicore stock sharpens manganese strategy as China risk looms

- Umicore is promoting lithium-manganese-rich materials as an alternative to lithium iron phosphate batteries.
- Concentrated Chinese refining capacity makes supply security a strategic issue for battery materials.
Umicore outlined its manganese-focused battery-materials strategy in a publication dated Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Since the latest relevant report, the stock moved from 18.66 euros at 10:59 CET to 18.96 euros at 17:46 CET on Wednesday, November 4, a 1.61 percent increase. The newer quote qualifies as the relevant change for this second main report.
Umicore positions lithium-manganese-rich, or LMR, cathode materials as a potential alternative to lithium iron phosphate in volume electric vehicles. The company says LMR uses more manganese and less nickel and cobalt while seeking energy density comparable with nickel-manganese-cobalt materials. Its protected materials can be produced in Finland and Poland, according to Umicore investor relations.
Supply concentration remains central
Umicore says around 90 percent of refining capacity for high-purity battery-grade manganese sulphate monohydrate is concentrated in China. That makes refined manganese a potential bottleneck even though manganese ore is widely distributed.
The company also expects batteries entering recycling streams over the next 10 to 15 years to contain more cobalt and nickel than manganese. Recycling is therefore unlikely to solve the near-term supply issue for manganese-rich battery materials.
Flexibility carries execution risk
Umicore says the same factories can produce high-nickel and high-manganese cathode grades. That flexibility could help the group respond to changing customer demand without building entirely separate production lines, but commercial relevance will depend on LMR adoption, European battery output and customer orders.
The real-time quote of Umicore stock was 18.96 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 17:46 CET on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
