Umicore's manganese strategy is putting lithium-manganese-rich battery materials at the center of its positioning for the volume electric-vehicle market. In a company newsroom publication dated Wednesday, October 21, the Brussels-listed group presented LMR chemistry as a potential alternative to lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, batteries.
Umicore's publication says LMR materials use more manganese and less nickel and cobalt while targeting energy density comparable with nickel-manganese-cobalt cathodes. That combination could address the cost pressure that has helped LFP gain ground in mass-market electric vehicles.
Existing Sites Support Flexibility
Umicore says it has developed and protected specific LMR cathode-active materials that can be produced at its sites in Finland and Poland. Research, Development and Innovation Director Pierre-Etienne said the company is focused on increasing manganese content while reducing nickel and cobalt without sacrificing performance.
The company also says high-nickel and high-manganese materials can be produced in the same factories. For investors, that manufacturing flexibility could allow Umicore to adapt existing capacity as demand shifts between cathode chemistries, rather than relying on separate production facilities.
China Concentration Raises Risk
The supply-chain argument is central to the strategy. Umicore says manganese ore is widely distributed, but around 90 percent of refining capacity for battery-grade high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate is concentrated in China. That concentration creates a potential bottleneck for battery supply and makes refined manganese a critical raw material.
Umicore's manganese procurement manager Vincent Braet said visibility across the full supply chain is not yet where the company wants it to be. The company also points to manganese's lower carbon footprint compared with several other battery raw materials, while noting that its relatively low value limits the near-term incentive to recycle it.
Investor Relevance
The strategy gives Umicore a technology and supply-security angle in the battery-materials market. Its commercial importance will depend on customer adoption of LMR chemistry, the development of European battery production and the group's ability to convert technical flexibility into sustained demand.
