Umicore stock is highlighting manganese-rich battery materials for volume electric vehicles. Production flexibility could support changing cathode demand.

Manganese Strategy and Supply Risk

  • Umicore is developing lithium-manganese-rich cathode materials for the volume electric-vehicle market.
  • The company says around 90 percent of battery-grade manganese refining capacity is concentrated in China.
  • Protected LMR materials can be produced in Finland and Poland using existing manufacturing capacity.

Umicore is putting lithium-manganese-rich, or LMR, battery materials at the center of its positioning for the volume electric-vehicle market. In a newsroom article published on October 21, the Brussels-based materials group presented LMR chemistry as an alternative to lithium iron phosphate batteries while emphasizing lower use of nickel and cobalt.

Umicore says LMR materials can target energy density comparable with nickel-manganese-cobalt cathodes while using more manganese and less nickel and cobalt. The company describes the chemistry as a way to address battery cost and performance requirements in the mass market, where lithium iron phosphate has gained ground because of its lower raw-material cost.

Production Flexibility Supports Strategy

The company has developed and protected LMR cathode-active materials that can be produced at its sites in Finland and Poland. Umicore also says high-nickel and high-manganese materials can be made in the same factories. That setup could allow existing capacity to serve different cathode chemistries as customer demand changes, rather than requiring separate production facilities.

Research, Development and Innovation Director Pierre-Etienne said Umicore is focused on maximizing manganese content while reducing cobalt and nickel without sacrificing performance. The company describes manganese as a structural stabilizer in NMC materials that also improves thermal stability and battery safety.

China Remains a Supply Bottleneck

The strategy carries a significant supply-chain risk. Umicore says manganese ore is widely distributed, but around 90 percent of refining capacity for battery-grade high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate is concentrated in China. Purchase Manager Vincent Braet described that concentration as the source of the material's criticality and said visibility across the complete supply chain remains below the desired level.

Umicore's publication also links higher manganese content with lower raw-material costs and a potentially lower carbon footprint for the material mix. However, the company has not presented the article as a new contract, earnings forecast or capacity commitment. The commercial impact will depend on customer adoption of LMR chemistry and the development of European battery production.
