UMC stock faces AI test as mature-chip expansion accelerates

- UMC is targeting AI-related demand through mature and specialty semiconductor technologies rather than leading-edge processor production.
- The company approved an additional US$3.2 billion capital budget while keeping its 2026 capital-expenditure guidance at US$2.0 billion.
- Management expects low-single-digit shipment growth, firm US-dollar pricing and utilization in the low-90% range during the fourth quarter.
United Microelectronics is seeking a broader role in the artificial intelligence supply chain as demand grows for power-management, connectivity and optical communication chips. A November 3 analysis by CommonWealth Magazine highlights the opportunity for mature and specialty processes alongside the risks of a large capacity program.
UMC is not competing directly with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing in the race for the most advanced AI processors. Instead, its strategy targets supporting applications such as power management, networking, interfaces and optical communication, where reliability, cost and application-specific performance can matter more than the smallest process node.
AI demand broadens UMC's target market
The company is developing advanced packaging and silicon photonics as potential growth areas. CommonWealth Magazine also notes that UMC continues to serve display-driver, automotive, wireless-connectivity and consumer markets, which gives the business exposure beyond a single AI product cycle.
UMC's board approved an additional capital budget of approximately US$3.2 billion on October 28 for capacity deployment in Singapore and Tainan. The approval is separate from the US$2.0 billion capital-expenditure guidance for 2026. Spending will depend on project schedules and customer requirements, while some existing capacity is being converted for nearer-term specialty demand.
Expansion raises execution pressure
The investment case now depends on more than high utilization. UMC must turn customer engagements into production, manage qualification and yield timelines, and protect pricing as other foundries add mature-node capacity. Silicon photonics and advanced packaging offer longer-term potential, but the company has not disclosed a separate quarterly revenue contribution for silicon photonics.
For the fourth quarter, management expects wafer shipments to rise by a low-single-digit percentage from the preceding quarter. Average selling prices in US dollars are expected to remain firm, while utilization should stay in the low-90% range.
