- Reported negotiations could give TSMC primary responsibility for building and operating Tesla's Texas chip facility.
- Ownership, investment terms and Intel's future role remain unresolved.
- Terafab volume production is targeted for late 2028, but the schedule remains an aspiration.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company could take a broader role in Tesla's planned Terafab chip project in Texas, according to a Yahoo Finance report published Monday, November 2, 2026. Supply-chain sources cited by DigiTimes said Elon Musk had softened his earlier position and that negotiations could resume.
A Broader Role Remains Unsettled
The reported discussions could move beyond TSMC subleasing part of the site. The company may take primary responsibility for construction and fab operations, while equity ownership and investment arrangements remain under discussion. The report does not establish a signed agreement or a completed transaction.
Last month, Musk said Tesla and SpaceX would build and operate the facility, with TSMC limited to a possible sublease. Intel was previously linked to the project through its next-generation 14A process, but the latest report does not clarify how Intel would fit into a larger TSMC role.
Production Timing Remains Distant
Musk has said he wants a test chip working around May or June 2027 at a research fab in Austin, Texas. Volume production at Terafab is targeted for the third or fourth quarter of 2028, although he described that timetable as an aspiration.
The development could expand TSMC's potential US manufacturing footprint and create an additional route to serve Tesla-related chip demand. For investors, the immediate issue remains execution: the project's control structure, funding and operating responsibilities have not been settled.
