- TSMC may take a larger role in building and operating Tesla's Texas Terafab.
- Ownership and investment terms remain under discussion, leaving the commercial structure unresolved.
- Reported production targets remain aspirational, with a test chip targeted for May or June 2027.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. may take a larger role in Tesla's planned Terafab chip project in Texas, according to a November 4 report by NeoTeo. The report said talks could resume, while ownership and investment terms remain under discussion.
A larger operating role remains unsettled
The reported shift would move TSMC closer to primary responsibility for building and operating the Texas facility. Tesla and SpaceX had previously been described as planning to build and run the fab themselves, with TSMC potentially limited to subleasing part of the site.
The operating question remains central. TSMC CEO C.C. Wei has said the company would need to operate any fab it joined, while Elon Musk had previously assigned construction and operating duties to Tesla and SpaceX. The latest reports do not establish a final agreement or clarify Intel's role.
Targets remain years away
Musk's reported timetable calls for a test chip around May or June 2027 at an Austin research fab. Volume production at Terafab in the third or fourth quarter of 2028 remains an aspiration, according to the NeoTeo report.
