Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company could take a larger role in Tesla's Terafab project in Texas, according to a November 2 report carried by Yahoo Finance. The report said Tesla CEO Elon Musk may be preparing to reopen negotiations with TSMC after previously limiting the Taiwanese chipmaker to a possible site sublease.

Possible Shift In Project Control

The reported discussions could give TSMC primary responsibility for building and operating the facility. Equity ownership and investment arrangements remain unresolved, so the talks do not represent a completed transaction or a final operating structure.

Intel was the first major chipmaker publicly linked to Terafab, and Musk had previously said the project would use Intel's next-generation 14A process. The latest report did not clarify how Intel's role would change if TSMC assumed broader responsibility.

Production Ambitions Remain Distant

Musk has described volume production at Terafab in the third or fourth quarter of 2028 as an aspiration. A test chip is targeted for around May or June 2027 at a research facility in Austin, Texas, according to the report.
