- TSMC may take primary responsibility for construction and operations at Tesla's Texas chip project.
- Equity ownership, investment terms and Intel's future role remain unresolved.
- Test-chip work is targeted for mid-2027, while volume production remains an aspiration for late 2028.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company may take a broader role in Tesla's planned Terafab chip project in Texas, according to a Yahoo Finance report published on Monday, November 2. The report said Tesla CEO Elon Musk may be preparing to reopen negotiations with TSMC after previously limiting the Taiwanese chipmaker to a possible site sublease.
Possible shift in project control
The discussions could move toward TSMC taking primary responsibility for building and operating the facility. Equity ownership and investment arrangements remain under discussion, so the report does not establish a signed agreement or a completed transaction.
Intel was previously linked to Terafab after Musk said Tesla planned to use Intel's next-generation 14A manufacturing process. The latest report did not clarify how Intel's role would change if TSMC assumes broader responsibility.
Production targets remain distant
Musk has described a test chip around May or June 2027 at a research facility in Austin, Texas, as a goal. Volume production in the third or fourth quarter of 2028 remains an aspiration and depends on the project's development.
