What investors will watch next

  • Toyota is expected to post its first operating-profit increase in six quarters.
  • Weak Chinese and Middle Eastern sales contrast with stronger electrified-vehicle demand in North America.

Toyota Motor is heading into its fiscal second-quarter results with analysts expecting an operating-profit rebound, while weak Chinese demand remains the main risk. A Reuters report carried by the Charlotte Observer said the July-September operating profit is forecast to rise 18 percent to 992 billion yen.

China remains the pressure point

The median estimate from nine analysts surveyed by LSEG calls for revenue of 13.4 trillion yen, an 8 percent increase. The projected profit gain would be Toyota's first in six quarters, supported by a weaker yen, stronger demand for higher-margin hybrids and the absence of US tariff-related costs that affected the year-earlier period.

The earnings outlook is not supported by broad-based volume growth. Toyota and Lexus global sales fell 4 percent to just over 2.5 million vehicles in the quarter, with China sales down 22 percent and deliveries in the Middle East lower by roughly one-third.

Hybrid demand faces a margin test

North America offers a more favorable mix. Electrified-vehicle sales in the region rose by more than 30 percent to almost 430,000 units, while total US sales increased by less than 1 percent. Investors will therefore focus on whether hybrid demand can offset pressure on Toyota's gasoline-powered and hybrid-heavy lineup in China, where domestic manufacturers are competing aggressively as the market shifts toward electric vehicles.

The results will also indicate whether the expected improvement comes mainly from operating performance, currency effects or easier comparisons. Toyota's factory automation, vehicle software and autonomous-driving investments remain strategic priorities, with automation and robotics spending expected to reach 1 trillion yen annually from 2028.
