Toyota Motor is heading into its fiscal second-quarter results with analysts expecting an operating-profit rebound, even as weak Chinese demand remains a central risk. Reuters said in a report published late Tuesday, November 3, that operating profit for the July-September quarter is forecast to rise 18 percent to 992 billion yen.
The median estimate from nine analysts surveyed by LSEG also calls for revenue of 13.4 trillion yen, an 8 percent increase. The forecast would mark Toyota's first operating-profit gain in six quarters, helped by a weaker yen, demand for higher-margin hybrids and the absence of US tariff-related costs that weighed on the year-earlier period.
China remains the pressure point
The earnings outlook is not supported by broad-based volume growth. Toyota and Lexus global sales fell 4 percent to just over 2.5 million vehicles in the quarter, according to Reuters. Sales in China dropped 22 percent, while deliveries in the Middle East fell by roughly one-third.
North America provides a more favorable mix. Sales of electrified vehicles in the region rose by more than 30 percent to almost 430,000 units, while total US sales increased by less than 1 percent. Reuters quoted Yuya Takahashi of Marusan Securities as saying that higher gasoline prices are supporting demand for fuel-efficient hybrids, with the key question being how many of those vehicles Toyota sells at stronger margins.
Results will test the product mix
Investors are likely to focus on whether hybrid demand can offset the pressure on Toyota's gasoline-powered and hybrid-heavy lineup in China, where domestic manufacturers are competing aggressively as the market shifts toward electric vehicles. The result will also show whether the expected profit improvement comes mainly from operating performance, currency effects and easier comparisons.
Toyota has indicated that factory automation, vehicle software and autonomous-driving investment will remain strategic priorities. Reuters said the company estimates that modernizing its factories could cost 1 trillion yen annually from 2028 as automation and robotics investment expands.
