TotalEnergies has signed agreements to acquire a 30% operated interest in the Lang Lebah and B14 gas fields off Sarawak, Malaysia. The company announced the transaction on Monday, November 2, with completion still subject to regulatory approvals.

The agreements were signed with PETRONAS Carigali, PTTEP and KUFPEC. TotalEnergies said the two fields are planned as an integrated project that could unlock more than 6.5 trillion cubic feet of gas resources, equivalent to more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

Integrated project targets LNG supply

The combined development is designed to supply the existing Malaysia LNG liquefaction plant. TotalEnergies expects production to reach a plateau of around 10 billion cubic meters per year, supporting LNG demand in Asia.

Upon completion, TotalEnergies would operate both fields with a 30% interest. PTTEP and KUFPEC would each hold 25%, while PETRONAS Carigali would retain 20%.

TotalEnergies said the transaction strengthens its integrated gas position in Malaysia. Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne described the project as another step toward creating a large-scale gas hub that uses shared infrastructure.

Execution remains the next catalyst

For investors, regulatory clearance and the subsequent completion of the agreements are the immediate milestones. The production timetable, capital requirements and final development arrangements will determine how quickly the project can contribute to TotalEnergies' gas portfolio.

The Malaysia move follows the company's stated expansion of its local gas presence, while the planned supply route links upstream development with existing LNG infrastructure.

Market conditions remain relevant for energy shares; current European market reports provide the broader regional context.
