- Thyssenkrupp Steel has secured final revised funding terms for the tkH2Steel project.
- The direct reduction plant can use natural gas, hydrogen or a blend during the transition.
- A new long-term hydrogen tender is expected to start shortly.
On Friday, October 30, thyssenkrupp Steel said it had received the final revision to the funding terms for its tkH2Steel decarbonization project in Duisburg. The company said the revised framework creates a reliable basis for continuing construction while adapting the hydrogen ramp-up to market conditions.
Funding terms meet market reality
The thyssenkrupp press release said the revised requirements reflect weaker hydrogen-market conditions. Production capacity, transmission infrastructure and import routes remain below the levels originally expected, while green hydrogen costs more than anticipated.
The new terms allow the direct reduction plant to increase its hydrogen share gradually, depending on availability, economic feasibility and customer demand. The plant can run on natural gas, hydrogen or a mixture of both, while the long-term goal of full hydrogen operation remains unchanged.
Tender becomes the next test
Thyssenkrupp Steel is preparing a new tender for the long-term hydrogen supply of the plant. The process is expected to begin shortly and will draw on information from an earlier process covering prices, available quantities and supply chains.
For investors, the funding decision removes one framework uncertainty but does not secure a supply contract. The commercial outcome of the tender will therefore remain important for the pace and economics of the hydrogen transition.
Construction scale adds context
The project is designed for annual production of 2.5 million metric tons of directly reduced iron. Thyssenkrupp said the plant could cut CO2 emissions by up to 3.5 million metric tons per year; even operation with natural gas alone would reduce emissions by more than 50 percent compared with the existing coal-based blast-furnace route.
Next date for investors
The company's investor-relations calendar lists a London roadshow for Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Further execution of the hydrogen tender and construction work will shape the project's next milestones.
