Suncor Energy reported record cash generation for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, while raising shareholder distributions and agreeing to sell non-core offshore interests. The Calgary-based company released the figures on Tuesday, November 3, after the market close. Its third-quarter results release said the figures are unaudited and presented in Canadian dollars.
Cash generation reaches a record
Net earnings increased to C$3.814 billion from C$1.619 billion in the year-earlier quarter. Basic earnings per share rose to C$3.27 from C$1.34. Adjusted operating earnings, a non-GAAP measure, climbed to C$4.631 billion from C$1.794 billion, with higher upstream price realizations, stronger downstream margins and increased high-value global export sales supporting the result.
Suncor generated adjusted funds from operations of C$6.705 billion, compared with C$3.831 billion a year earlier. Free funds flow rose to C$5.196 billion from C$2.347 billion. The company said the non-GAAP measures are intended to help assess operating performance and liquidity and should not be viewed as substitutes for GAAP measures.
Net earnings included a non-cash asset impairment of C$1.080 billion related to the planned offshore divestiture. The company also reported current income tax and royalty expenses of C$3.518 billion for the quarter, predominantly attributable to Canada.
Production mixed, sales set record
Total upstream production averaged 852,500 barrels per day, down from 870,000 barrels per day in the prior-year quarter. Oil Sands bitumen production declined to 948,000 barrels per day, mainly because of maintenance at Syncrude, while Exploration and Production output increased to 64,000 barrels per day from 57,800 barrels per day.
Refinery crude throughput was 487,700 barrels per day, compared with 491,700 barrels per day a year earlier, and utilization was 95 percent. Refined product sales reached a third-quarter record of 676,900 barrels per day, up from 646,800 barrels per day, supported by higher export capacity and domestic retail volumes.
Higher payouts and asset sale
Suncor returned C$2.048 billion to shareholders during the quarter through buybacks and dividends. Beginning in October, planned monthly share repurchases increased to C$750 million from C$500 million, implying planned 2026 repurchases of C$5.5 billion. The board also approved a quarterly dividend of C$0.66 per share, 10 percent above the prior quarter.
The company agreed to sell its interests in Terra Nova, White Rose and West White Rose for C$1.2 billion, with a further payment of up to C$350 million tied to future oil prices. The transaction is expected to close in early 2027, subject to customary conditions, regulatory approvals and partner consents. Suncor said the buyer will assume associated investment commitments and future liabilities.
