Suncor Energy reported record cash generation for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, and expanded its shareholder-return program. The company also agreed to sell non-core offshore interests, shifting future investment and abandonment obligations to the buyer.

In its third-quarter release carried by TMX Newsfile, Suncor said adjusted funds from operations reached 6.705 billion Canadian dollars, compared with 3.831 billion Canadian dollars a year earlier. Free funds flow rose to 5.196 billion Canadian dollars from 2.347 billion Canadian dollars, while net earnings increased to 3.814 billion Canadian dollars.

Higher payouts follow strong cash generation

Suncor returned 2.048 billion Canadian dollars to shareholders during the quarter through dividends and share repurchases. Beginning in October, planned monthly buybacks increased to 750 million Canadian dollars from 500 million Canadian dollars, with projected 2026 repurchases of 5.5 billion Canadian dollars.

The board also approved a quarterly dividend of 0.66 Canadian dollars per share, a 10 percent increase from the prior payment. Net debt stood at 1.751 billion Canadian dollars at September 30, down from 7.147 billion Canadian dollars a year earlier.

Offshore sale reduces non-core exposure

Suncor agreed to sell its interests in Terra Nova, White Rose and West White Rose for 1.2 billion Canadian dollars, plus a possible contingent payment of up to 350 million Canadian dollars tied to future oil prices. The transaction is expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, partner consents and other closing conditions.

The buyer will assume future investment commitments and liabilities, including a 500 million Canadian dollar regulatory well-compliance program at Terra Nova beginning in 2027. Suncor also reported a present value of estimated future abandonment and lease liabilities of 1.4 billion Canadian dollars and recorded a 1.080 billion Canadian dollar non-cash impairment related to the planned divestiture.

Suncor's downstream business also contributed to the quarter. Refined product sales reached a record 676,900 barrels per day, while refinery utilization was 95 percent. Higher upstream price realizations, stronger downstream margins and increased high-value export sales lifted adjusted operating earnings to 4.631 billion Canadian dollars.
