Results reset the outlook

  • Management lowered its 2026 organic sales growth and adjusted earnings guidance.
  • Adjusted margin expansion and stronger earnings offered support as investors assess fourth-quarter execution.

Stryker reported third-quarter results on Thursday, October 29, with sales growth and improved adjusted profitability but a lower full-year outlook. The medical technology company said performance fell short of its expectations, while Chief Executive Kevin Lobo said the underlying fundamentals remained strong. The company's third-quarter release was issued after the U.S. market close.

Lower guidance raises execution pressure

Stryker generated USD 6.52 billion in sales in the quarter ended September 30, up 7.7% from a year earlier. Organic sales also rose 7.7%, driven mainly by higher unit volume. MedSurg and Neurotechnology grew 9.2% on a reported basis, while Orthopaedics advanced 5.7%.

Reported net earnings fell 12.3% to USD 753 million, and diluted earnings per share declined 11.7% to USD 1.96. A USD 293 million goodwill impairment was included in the quarter. On an adjusted basis, net earnings increased 10.1% to USD 1.4 billion and adjusted earnings per share rose 10.3% to USD 3.52. The adjusted operating margin widened by 60 basis points to 26.2%.

Management now expects 2026 organic sales growth of 6.5% to 7.0%, below the previous range of 8.3% to 9.3%. Adjusted diluted earnings per share are forecast at USD 14.80 to USD 14.90, compared with the former range of USD 14.95 to USD 15.10. The company said fourth-quarter organic growth should be broadly comparable with the third quarter.

What has changed since the last report

For investors, margin resilience now offsets part of the pressure from the reduced sales and earnings ranges. Procedure volumes, capital equipment demand and operating execution remain the key tests for the fourth quarter.
