- Standard Lithium is targeting a year-end investment decision for its South West Arkansas project.
- Construction could begin in early 2027, with first production targeted for 2029 if financing and the investment decision are secured.
- The project is planned to produce 22,500 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually in its first stage.
Standard Lithium is approaching a key decision on its South West Arkansas lithium project. The Northern Miner reported on November 3 that the company and Equinor are targeting a final investment decision by year-end for the planned direct lithium extraction project.
Decision and construction timeline
The project carries estimated initial capital costs of 1.45 billion US dollars. Subject to the investment decision and financing, the partners aim to start construction in early 2027 and begin production in 2029.
The first stage is designed to produce 22,500 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually over a modeled 20-year operating life, with room for expansion. Standard Lithium owns 55 percent of Smackover Lithium and acts as operator, while Equinor owns the remaining 45 percent.
Funding and execution risks
The Northern Miner said the joint venture has offtake agreements covering up to 20,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate annually, equivalent to about 89 percent of planned first-stage output. The partners are still finalizing project financing, and earlier indications of interest for more than 1 billion US dollars in debt were not financing commitments.
The project also carries technology and execution risk. Direct lithium extraction is designed to recover lithium from underground brines, but the commercial-scale application remains relatively new. Standard Lithium says its demonstration plant in Arkansas has processed more than 160 million liters of brine since 2020.
