SpaceX stock is in focus after the company agreed to buy 800 MHz spectrum for Starlink Mobile. Regulatory approval remains ahead.

Spectrum Deal Broadens Starlink Mobile

  • SpaceX agreed to acquire up to 14 megahertz of paired 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management.
  • The FCC authorized a next-generation Starlink Mobile constellation of 15,000 satellites, while the spectrum transaction still requires approval.
  • The low-band licenses are intended to improve indoor coverage and complement Starlink Mobile's existing 2 GHz capacity.

SpaceX is expanding Starlink Mobile toward a hybrid satellite and terrestrial network. On October 8, the company announced an agreement to acquire up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band from Grain Management. The announcement and the related regulatory milestone were reported by SpaceX, while Via Satellite said the financial terms were not disclosed.

Low-Band Coverage Adds A New Layer

SpaceX said the new licenses would address a key gap in Starlink Mobile's U.S. network strategy. The company's existing global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum is designed to provide high bandwidth, while the 800 MHz licenses are intended to improve signal penetration through obstacles such as walls and support connections inside buildings.

The plan would combine SpaceX's satellite-to-device constellation with terrestrial deployment. SpaceX said most existing mobile devices already support the band, which could reduce the need for specialized customer hardware. Via Satellite described Starlink Mobile as separate from SpaceX's broadband internet constellation and said the new spectrum would support indoor as well as outdoor coverage.

The transaction is not yet complete. It remains subject to final FCC approval and customary closing conditions, so the agreement does not by itself establish a launch date for commercial service. The spectrum's eventual contribution will depend on regulatory clearance, network construction and the operating performance of the combined satellite and terrestrial architecture.

FCC Clears Next-Generation Constellation

In the same October 8 update, SpaceX said the FCC had approved its Gen2 Starlink Mobile constellation application. The authorization covers 15,000 satellites optimized for 2 GHz spectrum globally. SpaceX said the V2 satellites are designed to deliver more than 100 times the bandwidth of the current generation and to connect unmodified devices.

The FCC also authorized backhaul bands used by Starlink's V3 broadband satellites to operate with the existing gateway network, according to SpaceX. For investors, the approvals remove one hurdle for the long-term direct-to-device strategy, but they do not eliminate execution risk around spectrum integration, terrestrial infrastructure and customer adoption.
