- Adjusted earnings benefited from warmer weather, higher usage, customer growth and stronger large-customer demand.
- Management sees Southeast growth as unprecedented and transformational while warning of investment and financing demands.
Southern Company reported stronger third-quarter results on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as electricity demand, customer growth and large commercial accounts lifted revenue. The company said in a Nasdaq-published release that third-quarter operating revenue rose to USD 8.843 billion from USD 7.823 billion a year earlier, an increase of 13.0 percent.
Net income attributable to Southern Company increased to USD 2.046 billion from USD 1.711 billion. Reported basic earnings per share rose to USD 1.77 from USD 1.55. Excluding specified items, adjusted earnings per share reached USD 1.94, compared with USD 1.60 in the prior-year quarter.
Customer demand drives revenue growth
The operating backdrop was strongest in the companys traditional electric businesses. Total electricity sales increased 7.3 percent to 60.790 billion kilowatt-hours, while retail sales rose 7.7 percent. Weather-adjusted retail sales increased 3.5 percent, indicating that the quarter was supported by more than warmer conditions alone.
Commercial retail sales advanced 10.1 percent, with weather-adjusted growth of 7.3 percent. Residential sales rose 10.2 percent, while industrial sales gained 2.5 percent. Southern Company attributed the adjusted earnings improvement to warmer weather, higher usage, customer growth, rising revenue from large commercial and industrial customers and stronger earnings at Southern Power.
Those gains were partly offset by higher non-fuel operations and maintenance expenses, increased taxes other than income taxes and dilution from additional shares. Southern Power contributed USD 52 million of net income, compared with USD 3 million a year earlier. Southern Company Gas reported USD 21 million, down from USD 25 million.
Reported profit includes special items
The gap between reported and adjusted earnings reflects several charges. The quarter included USD 118 million of pre-tax accelerated depreciation and decommissioning costs tied to wind-facility repowering, USD 43 million of debt-extinguishment costs and an estimated USD 9 million loss related to Nicor Gas capital investments. Southern Company said repowering costs are expected to continue through the third quarter of 2027.
For the first nine months, operating revenue reached USD 24.218 billion, up 7.3 percent from USD 22.572 billion. Reported earnings per share rose to USD 4.02 from USD 3.56, while adjusted earnings per share increased to USD 4.40 from USD 3.76.
Capital needs remain central
Chairman, President and CEO Chris Womack said the Southeast is growing at a pace that is unprecedented and transformational. He said Southern Companys scale, experience and customer-focused strategy position it to serve rising demand for reliable energy.
For investors, the earnings profile combines visible demand growth with higher capital requirements. Data-center and other large-load expansion can support utility sales, but generation, transmission and financing needs will determine how much of that demand converts into durable earnings and cash returns. Regulatory approvals, project execution and interest costs remain important variables for the investment case.
