Sony Group Corp. stock gets an 8 percent profit outlook boost
Published on 10/05/2026 at 19:31 | Editorial responsibility: Rafael Müller, Editor-in-Chief AD HOC NEWSSony Group Corp. stock was last at JPY 3,723 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange at 3:30 p.m. JST on October 5, 2026, down 0.80 percent from the prior close. The latest quarterly figures point to a stronger earnings trajectory, with Sony raising its full-year operating profit guidance after the June quarter.
Profit guidance rises after Q1
According to Morningstar on September 28, 2026, Sony's FY2026 first-quarter operating profit increased 40 percent year over year to JPY 476.5 billion. The company lifted its full-year operating profit guidance by 8 percent to JPY 1.72 trillion.
The comparison is important because the earlier guidance stood at JPY 1.60 trillion. The revised outlook implies that the first-quarter performance was more than a one-quarter accounting effect, although the full-year target still depends on demand in the second half.
Sensor margins add operating leverage
Morningstar said the Imaging and Sensing Solutions business reached a 23.8 percent operating margin in the first quarter, its highest first-quarter level in a decade, according to the same September 28 analysis. Product mix improvement was identified alongside tariff refunds and foreign-exchange effects as a contributor to the result.
Sony's earnings mix therefore matters as much as the headline guidance increase. A higher-margin sensor contribution can support group profitability, while the 19.9 percent full-year operating margin guidance cited by Morningstar leaves room for weaker second-half demand to affect the final outcome.
Analysts see upside to JPY 4,865.91
Marketscreener lists a Buy consensus from 23 analysts, an average target of JPY 4,865.91, a high target of JPY 6,030.00 and a low target of JPY 3,800.00. Against the JPY 3,723 reference price, the average target lies 30.7 percent above the price.
The valuation gap gives investors a clear test for the guidance upgrade: Sony must convert the strong sensor and gaming contribution into sustained group earnings rather than rely on one-time benefits. The October 5 price was also JPY 1,053 below the 52-week high of JPY 4,776, leaving the shares below their yearly peak despite the improved profit outlook.
