Solvay stock faces weaker Q3 profitability after Middle East disruption. A binding Viridis agreement secures rare-earth feedstock for La Rochelle from 2028.

Earnings Pressure Meets Strategic Progress

  • Middle East disruption and weak soda ash demand reduced third-quarter profitability.
  • The rare-earth agreement strengthens Solvay's long-term supply chain and La Rochelle platform.
  • Management retained its revised full-year outlook despite the operational setback.

Solvay reported a sharp third-quarter earnings decline on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, while adding a concrete step to its rare-earth strategy. In its third-quarter results, the company said underlying EBITDA fell organically by 26.6% to EUR 173 million, while the margin narrowed to 16.8% from 22.2% a year earlier.

Underlying net sales reached EUR 1.031 billion, down 3.3% organically. Solvay attributed roughly EUR 25 million of the EBITDA impact to the conflict in the Middle East, including close to EUR 15 million from the continued suspension of its Peroxides plant at the Sadara complex in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Weak soda ash markets and a difficult comparison with prior-year carbon dioxide emissions-rights proceeds added to the pressure.

What Has Changed Since The Last Report

The Viridis agreement now provides a more defined framework for Solvay's rare-earth supply. Under the binding agreement announced by Solvay, the initial term runs through 2034, and minimum committed volumes for key magnetic rare earths represent approximately 70% of the anticipated production capacity of Viridis' Colossus project. Shipments to Solvay's La Rochelle facility are expected to begin in 2028.

The arrangement covers feedstock containing neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium, as well as additional heavy rare earths. Solvay also holds a right of first offer on remaining production. Separately, discussions with OneIM about a possible joint venture remain ongoing, with no definitive agreement announced.

Outlook Holds Despite Operational Strain

Solvay retained its revised 2026 outlook for underlying EBITDA of EUR 720 million to EUR 740 million and free cash flow to shareholders from continuing operations of EUR 120 million to EUR 150 million, net of transformation expenses. The company is also targeting cumulative structural savings of EUR 300 million by the end of 2026.

The Board approved an interim gross dividend of EUR 0.97 per share, payable on January 20, 2027. For broader European context, see the Euro Stoxx 50 market overview.
