SoftBank Corp joined five Japanese companies in a government-backed project to build a quantum-computing-based materials development platform. The consortium announced the initiative on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after its proposal was selected by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO. The SoftBank press release identifies the five partners as TOPPAN Holdings, AISIN, Asahi Kasei, AGC and DIC.

Research Runs Through Fiscal 2028

The joint agreement covers fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2028. Its aim is to move quantum-computing applications from demonstrations toward practical materials development by combining quantum calculations with machine learning and other artificial intelligence methods.

The project will test applications for next-generation batteries, optical functional materials for displays and sensors, and superconducting materials for future devices. The partners also plan to synthesize materials based on simulation results and compare laboratory findings with those simulations to improve predictive accuracy.

SoftBank Builds Computing Infrastructure

SoftBank will operate a platform linking quantum computers with supercomputers. The company will use that infrastructure to generate material-development information, develop AI-based methods for using it and demonstrate optimization across several industrial fields, including energy-related materials such as next-generation batteries.

The initiative adds a technology-development project to SoftBank's broader computing strategy, but the announcement gives no financial target or forecast revenue. Its direct effect on earnings therefore remains unclear, while progress toward practical applications will be the main business milestone for investors.
