Shriram Finance expects drought-related credit stress to remain localized and temporary in fiscal 2027, even as deficient monsoon conditions weigh on rural incomes in parts of India. Financial Express reported the assessment on Tuesday, November 3, citing the lender's post-results commentary.

Localized pressure in vulnerable regions

Parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana face weaker farm output and tighter borrower cash flows after a deficient monsoon. Shriram Finance said it has seen a slight increase in Stage 2 assets in selected pockets, but expects the pressure to remain contained and seasonal.

The lender also said it has become more cautious in drought-prone areas, limiting the risk of fresh stress. Gross Stage 3 assets stood at 4.65 percent and net Stage 3 assets at 2.31 percent at the end of September 2026, according to the report.

Growth remains measured

Shriram Finance expects credit costs in selected regions and products to rise temporarily by 15 to 30 basis points for one or two quarters. Its credit cost was 2.03 percent of total assets in the September quarter, while management said the temporary increase should not materially affect profitability or return ratios.

The company is maintaining a fiscal 2027 assets-under-management growth range of 15 to 17 percent. Festive demand and continued government infrastructure spending could support rural incomes and help repayment trends improve in the second half of the fiscal year.

Shriram Finance reported a 59 percent year-on-year increase in second-quarter profit to 3,677 crore rupees, according to the Financial Express report. For investors, the key issue is whether strong margins and diversified lending can offset localized asset-quality pressure as the rural economy moves through the post-monsoon period.
