- SABIC Agri-Nutrients is planning an integrated ammonia, urea and carbon-capture complex in Saudi Arabia.
- The project is designed to strengthen the company's agricultural-nutrients export position and support its 2040 strategy.
- Execution and future fertilizer demand remain central considerations for investors.
Saudi Arabian Fertilizer, now operating as SABIC Agri-Nutrients, is advancing a major expansion of its agricultural-nutrients business. Gulf Construction reported on October 1, 2026, that Samsung E&A had secured the engineering, procurement, construction and project-management contract for the integrated complex.
Project broadens the production base
The development includes an ammonia plant using KBR technology, two urea plants and a carbon-capture unit. The urea facilities are planned to use technologies from Stamicarbon and thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology, while Shell Global Solutions International is supplying the carbon-capture technology.
The project follows the board's approval of the final investment decision for the company's seventh major project in September. Once completed, the complex is intended to increase SABIC Agri-Nutrients' urea production capacity from 4.8 million to 7.4 million tonnes per year, according to Gulf Construction.
Strategy matters beyond near-term earnings
The expansion is part of SABIC Agri-Nutrients' 2040 strategy to strengthen Saudi Arabia's position in global agricultural-nutrients exports. That gives the project a longer-term growth role, while the size and technical complexity of the facilities put execution at the centre of the investment case.
For investors, the key question is whether additional ammonia and urea volumes can translate into stronger cash generation once the facilities operate. Fertilizer prices, logistics costs, construction progress and capital discipline will shape that outcome.
