China Merchants Bank stock was trading at EUR 6.02 at Lang & Schwarz on October 16, 2026, at 9:33 a.m. CEST. The latest company-specific catalyst was a credit-profile revision by S&P Global Ratings dated September 16, 2026.
Credit profile moves higher
S&P affirmed China Merchants Bank's A-/Stable/A-2 issuer ratings and raised its stand-alone credit profile from bbb+ to a-. The agency cited the bank's intrinsic creditworthiness, entrenched market position, adequate capitalization, sound risk management and strong funding and liquidity.
The revised profile compares with a 9.7 percent risk-adjusted capital ratio at the end of fiscal year 2025, which S&P expects to remain broadly stable over the next two years. The agency also said the bank's moderate systemic importance limits extraordinary government support, creating a clear distinction between intrinsic strength and external backing.
What do the interim figures show?
China Merchants Bank released its 2026 semi-annual report on August 28. According to FUTU, first-half operating income reached CNY 178.181 billion, up 4.83 percent year over year, while net profit attributable to shareholders rose 2.02 percent to CNY 76.445 billion. Net interest income increased 5.60 percent to CNY 112.022 billion, while non-interest net income rose 3.42 percent to CNY 66.159 billion.
The mix of growth matters for investors. Corporate loan balances rose 9.08 percent from year-end, while retail loan balances declined 1.08 percent. The same report put the non-performing loan ratio at 0.94 percent and the loan-loss reserve coverage ratio at 385.10 percent at the end of the first half.
Next reporting date
Eulerpool lists October 23, 2026 as the expected reporting date for the third quarter. That date gives the market its next scheduled test of whether the first-half improvement in income and profit can continue.
Credit strength meets operating pressure
The rating action supports the bank's capital and risk-management profile, but the interim figures show why net interest margin and loan composition remain important. Faster corporate lending offset weaker retail balances, while fee income and interest income both contributed to first-half growth.
China Merchants Bank was trading at EUR 6.02 at Lang & Schwarz on October 16, 2026, at 9:33 a.m. CEST.
